Assistant Lab Technician

Department: Histotech/Lab Technician
Location: Urbana, IL

VitalSkin continues to grow rapidly and we are searching for an Assistant Lab Technician.

The Assistant Lab Technician works directly with the Histotech performing the daily functions of preparing the lab and maintaining basic QC and assistance. Under close supervision, the lab assistant will utilize laboratory information to accurately look up information pertaining to accessioning, special stains ordered and printing charged and regular slides for the techs.

Examples of Essential Functions:

  1. Changes the reagents on the H&E stainer per protocol and documents the changes for QC. Runs a QC slide provided by a tech to test the stainer. Before the patient tissue is stained a tech must approve the staining results on the control slide. The slide is kept on file by date for future reference.
  2. Melts blocks for cutting and organizes them by priority, testing, and color.
  3. Cleans the molds and returns them to the embedding center sorted by size for the next shift of embedding.
  4. Identifies discrepancies when matching cut blocks to stained slides and gives them to the tech who cut them for verification, loss of tissue, or technical concerns.
  5. Print slides with necessary information.
  6. Performs daily QC on the stainer, coverslipper, ovens and room temps, and slide printer as determined by lab protocols. Alerts the lead tech when filters are due to be changed.
  7. Assists in inventory and orders when requested. Receives inventory and writes the received dates on the containers before storing them in the designated areas.
  8. Retrieves blocks and slides for the pathologist when requested.
  9. Complete necessary paperwork and reports
  10. Provide backup assistance in specimen receiving or other clerical areas as requested.
  11. Adherence to safety regulations.

Qualifications Guidelines

Education/Training/Experience Required:

Bachelor's degree (Science preferred)

Knowledge:

  • Basic computer and word processing applications
  • QA and safety practices

Skills/Abilities:

  • Operate a personal computer including word processing
  • Accurate spelling, grammar, and punctuation
  • Schedule, organize, and complete work in accordance with company deadlines
  • Understand and follow specifications and instruction
  • Communicate effectively and work cooperatively with staff and management
